Guy Fawkes Night is an annual celebration on the evening of 5 November. It marks the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to destroy the Houses of Parliament, in London, United Kingdom.
It is primarily marked in the United Kingdom where it was compulsory, by fiat, until 1859, to celebrate the deliverance of the King of Great Britain; but, it is also celebrated in former British colonies including New Zealand,[1] Newfoundland, South Africa, and parts of the Caribbean. Bonfire Night was celebrated in Australia until the mid- to late 1970s, when sale and public use of fireworks was made illegal and the celebration was effectively abolished. It is also celebrated in the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda .[2] Festivities are centred on the use of fireworks and the lighting of bonfires.
This year, we didn't go to the Guy Fawkes night in Peachgrove Playcentre due to the fact that my hubby was so tired by the time he reached home at 3.30 p.m. However, I can share about what happened last year.
It was the first social event that we attended and I didn't really know what to expect. I didn't read the notice saying that "bring your own dinner"! I just assume that we all need to bring some food to be shared. So, I prepared two large containers of macaroni baked. When we were at the playcentre, I realized that every family had their own dinner and I was the only one who brought extra food! (malu....) Thankfully, I could store the rest of the macaroni baked in the fridge and my friends still be able to enjoyed it the next day. Surprisingly, some even asked the recipe! Though, some still mentioned about this during one of our meeting! I had to explain that it's part of Msians culture to bring some food when we are invited over to a party.
After we had our dinner, the fireworks began. Our social converner bought heaps of fireworks; ranges from the smallest to the biggest. Some small kids were quite afraid when the first firework began. Even Hafizah was afraid to hear the loud noise from the fireworks. My hubby had to bring her inside of the building and they joined the other frightened kids with their parents watching the fireworks through the glass windows.
I'm kind of frustrated not being able to attend this year's Guy Fawkes night event. Despite of the HDFM disease, there were some families that still turned up on that night. Oh, well, I jsut hope there'll be at least one more social event that I can attend before we are going back for good April next year!
