Is there anything that sounds funny here? Please read and share your thoughts.

Salam,

I've noticed this signboard in Sg. Klah Hot Spring Park. I just can't help but to notice some mistakes in the sentence structures on the board. Today, I want to test all of you who are reading this post. If any of you can give the best answer on how to rectify the mistakes, somebody will get something from me.

So, what are you waiting for? Read the sentences on this notice board and leave your comment in the comment box. You leave as many answers as you like.

Good luck!

Denotation & Connotation.

Salam,

In this entry I would like to discuss the differences between Connotation and Denotation and how will it affect the interpretation of meaning.

Connotation:
a word's connotation is things or attributes that the word brings to mind, any idea or notion suggested or associated with the word

Denotation:
a word's denotation is its reference to the things it designates, its direct, explicit meaning.

Why do we need to know about these two words when we want to translate a text, an article or any written forms? Well, basically when we use certain dictionary to translate from one language to another; let's say we want to translate from English to Bahasa Malaysia, we are using the denotation approach.

But when we translate some words (from English to BM too) using the Connotation approach, we need to be aware of the cultures, customs or even the current slang in the intended language- BM.

I reckon I better use some examples to give a clearer picture here. Let's say we want to translate this sentence: She has a slim figure and a nice smile.

Original sentence: She has a slim figure and a nice smile.
Denotation: Wanita tersebut mempunyai badan yg ramping dan senyuman yang menawan.
Connotation: Perempuan itu mempunyai badan yg ramping dan senyuman yang menawan.

The word "She" can be translated into the neutral tone word or the negative tone word. As "wanita" and "perempuan" are both refering to "she" but "perempuan" sometimes has negative connotation.

Thus, it is quite important for us to know which meaning is suitable in which context. If we try to do the literal translation or the word-per-word translation, we will end up with the funny meaning and the grammar will also be atrocious.

Affect & Effect (Simple English Grammar Tutorial)

Salam,

Many bloggers normally share tutorials on blogging tips and secrets. BUT....I'm so suck in blogging because I always learn from the other bloggers as well. It's also because I'm hopeless in IT especially in the HTML coding etc. So, I've decided to share what I know the best- that is to share some tutorials in Simple English Grammar.

To kick start the series, I just want to share The Differences between Affect & Effect. I've noticed that many of us always use the word "Effect" for both verb and noun. Now let's see how we actually should use these two words.

1. Affect (verb)- use to show the consequence of any processes or actions.

Example: Smoking can affect our health.
Scoring low mark in the exam can affect your final result.

2. Effect (noun)-  it is the outcome or the consequence itself.

Example:

The effects of smoking are mainly on the various health related problems, speeding up the aging process, can cause the birth defect on babies (for pregnant women) and also reducing the life span.

You have to think about the effects of your action before you decide to go on with it.

Okay. This is just a short and sweet tutorial just to help those who are always confuse in the usage of these two words. If any of you would like to know about other things or you need to clarify anything, I would love to hear from you as well. You can either drop the comment here or send me your questions to my e-mail nuradyani_rosly@yahoo.com.
